KEREA Energy price index (May 2022)
- The average cost of the renewable energy reduced slightly due to an adjustment in the price of the biogas supplier with the lowest energy cost per unit.
- Fossil fuels increased after the increase in the prices of petrol diesel and kerosene.
- Grid electricity remained the same.
- Renewable sources of energy remain the cheapest cost of energy to the consumer
Comments:
- Investing in renewable energy is not only beneficial from an environment and climate perspective but also from a cost perspective. Reducing energy costs makes businesses to be more profitable.
- The upfront cost for renewable energy is usually high but over time when the cost is levelized then it becomes much cheaper.
- Increasing the scaling up of renewable energy requires financial and business models that can reduce the upfront cost to the consumer while the investor recovers the investment from being paid overtime.
Comments
- If one has waste cereal or food waste, it is the cheapest way to produce energy. Converting the biogas through a generator means that it is possible to generate electricity cheaper than using electricity from the national grid throughout the day. The waste heat from the generator can be captured and used to generate hot water and heat up the biodigester to produce more gas.
- A time-of-day tariff for domestic users, like the time-of-day tariff for industrial users would make it feasible for domestic and small commercial consumers to consume more electricity and generate extra revenue for the utility especially at night when the wind energy is still being produced while the demand is low, resulting in the need to vent steam as geothermal and wind compete for the low demand. It is also a perfect time for people to charge electric personal and commercial vehicles benefit from a lower cost of electricity for transportation
- Exempting Duty on Materials used to fabricate biogas systems locally will reduce the upfront cost and allow users to reduce their cost of heating energy by over 50%.
- Financial Institutions can provide specialized loans for converting to biogas and even at a high interest rate, it will still be possible to service the loans from the savings.
Application
This creates investment opportunity for captive energy and power generation for hotels, institutions and some industries that have a requirement for both heat and electricity generation. This is known as energy as a service or the energy service company (ESCO) model.
Separation of organic waste at source can immediately convert it into feedstock that can be put into a biogas digester instead or dustbins and dumpsters.
A third-party investor can invest in the cost of a biogas system and then sell metered gas to a restaurant, hotel or institution at a tariff that will still be less than half of the cost for commercial LPG while at the same time reducing the amount of organic waste that is going to the dump sites and producing methane, which is 20 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas
